Is Milla Jovovich's latest film the movie that will end the trend of bad movies released in 2006? Read on...
No. No, it's not. I wanted to get that out of the way immediately.
Until today, I believed that I had a common disease that made me automatically like any movie I paid $6.50 to see in theaters. It turns out that I don't. I found myself more interested in the fact that my arm was going numb from leaning against the armrest than whatever was going on the screen while watching Ultraviolet.
My fear that this movie would be similar to Resident Evil: Apocalypse was wrong. That was a bad movie, but in a whole different way. I was expecting that one to be bad. I was expecting more out of a movie made by the same people who made the fantastic Equilibrium.
But moving on. Ultraviolet's setting is a futuristic world where a disease has broken out that has divided the human race into two: the humans, and the hemo-(that means blood)- somethings. I don't remember the actual name, but once in the film they referred to these hemos as "vampires" despite the fact that they don't drink blood (I think), but they have vampire fangs for some reason. I really didn't know what was going on, actually. They never really explained anything. I think it would have helped if I had the writer of the screenplay sitting next to me answering all of my questions.
There was one point in the film when I wanted to stand up and shout out "Does anybody here have a clue as to what's going on?" I'm sure they would have just told me to sit down and shut up, but not once did I hear the audience throughout the entire film. No "oohs" or "awes," just total silence.
These "vampires" if you will, use pretty cool weapons though. They have these devices that can store an infinite number of weapons in another dimension, but it seems that they also stored their personalities, backgrounds, and every interesting detail about them in these other dimensions, because I sure didn't see them. They also wield wicked swords, but the fights go so fast (or aren't even shown at all, you just hear them) that you can't really tell what's going on. Some of the fights were really well-done, but they were marred by super, totally ridiculous, comic-book style, unrealistic, cartoon-style special effects.
Why they aimed for a PG-13 rating I will never understand. At least 700 people die in this movie, but rarely is anything really shown. You usually just see a sword going near them, and then the camera cuts away. It's a movie about VAMPIRES!
I just can't understand how such a lame movie came from the same people who made Equilibrium. I could definitely see some resemblances, but they just didn't work for this one. Planks of wood would have been better suited as the characters for this movie. Or Keanu Reeves.
I give this movie a C. Some cool technology ideas and a few nice action scenes are this movie's only saving grace. |
