I had no real expectations from this film, but after seeing it, I cannot believe a studio didn't back this one for wide release. I suppose the star power was not there, but just about everything else was for a top shelf gangster drama. James Marden was excellent as Tommy, the Marine who finds himself in a jam and is forced to save his and his brothers hyde by ratting out his neighborhood buddies. While we have seen the story before, this one was extremely authentic with outstanding performances. Giovanni Ribisi as Joey comes through as the loyal but psychopathic ring leader of the small time gangsters trying to make a way after the organized mob has fallen. The best performance in this one goes to Brad Renfro, as the dim-witted Vincent, Tommy's brother, who is in way over his head and longs to be one of the go-to guys. 10th and Wolf hits the mark on many levels, but mostly because of its gritty realism. The shootout climax is a bit formula, but otherwise, it satisfies quite well. I recommend it. |
