Just a big letdown.

Dammit. I really wanted to like this movie and I wanted it to be fabulous. But it just wasn't. It kept going on and on, and I never really felt enthused by anything. The acting by Josh Hartnett and Hilary Swank was atrocious. Scarlett Johansson and Aaron Eckhart felt weak and unfleshed out - I wanted so much more from their characters.. same too with Kirshner's Dahlia Betty Short. Surprisingly, the best performance in the movie is from Fiona Shaw, who comes out of nowhere, and deserves a Best Supporting Actress nod for her work as the insane mum to Swank's Madeline. De Palma has no idea whether he's making a straight drama, a thriller, or a compelling cop picture. It's just flat flat flat. Just rent LA Confidential again. |
