Babe 2: Pig in the City is one of my favorite children's movies. It may seem a cheap thrill to dress up animals (especially monkeys!) and make a movie, but this film really has substance. Even while the story itself is fairly simple, great care is taken in the details. I love the singing mice (who do covers of Elvis and Dean Martin, amongst others) and the clown Fugly Floom (nasty and pitiful)! I delighted in the tongue in cheek moments: Edith Piaf sings 'Je ne regrette rien' as Mr. Fugly's monkey magic show tragically goes down in flames, literally. The best part of the film is Magna Szubanski as Esme Hoggett, who combimes just enough bumbling with kindess and determination to totally win me over. The film is also very strong visually and creates a larger world that, just like the farm, is a bit off center of the 20th century. The canals of the city, the staircases of the curious hotel, the skyline Babe gazes over, all this and more pulled me into this other world. It is a sweet fantasy with some dark humor that appeals to the kid in me, and the slightly embittered adult as well. I like the first film, but actually prefer this magical follow up.
