It is really a shame that this movie has to lurk in the shadow of last year's excellent CAPOTE, because INFAMOUS is really a very good film. Toby Jones is actually perfect and fascinating to watch as Truman Capote (he's even more like Truman than PS Hoffman was...Great Job, Toby!)...and all of the supporting cast is excellent as well, especially Sandra Bullock (Yes...her!)and Sigourney Weaver (but she's always excellent in everything, isn't she?). This film centers around the same time frame as CAPOTE and is basically a different take on the same material...giving us another reason to dismiss it altogether. If you don't go to see this movie because of the above stated reasons, then you are missing out on some fine entertainment. While CAPOTE was solemn as a freshly dug grave, there are plenty of laugh out loud moments in INFAMOUS, giving us much needed relief from the subject matter, which is the murder of the Kansas Clutter family in November of 1959. Toby Jones ought to be nominated for Best Actor, but he probably won't be cuz Hoffman already did it last year and won the coveted top prize for his also perfect portrayal. It will be a shame if he isn't. This film has plenty of humor to spare, and it also has a great big heart, largely, thanks to Ms. Bullock as Nell Harper Lee. I was surprised at how sympathetic I felt toward Perry, one of the murderers. The way I look at it, now we have a trilogy of excellent portrayals of The Infamous Clutter Murders of 1959. You should watch IN COLD BLOOD (1967) first, and then CAPOTE and finally, INFAMOUS. Case closed. |
