There is something genuine in this movie that sets it apart. The writers chose to be calm. There are too many movies about people and family dynamics where everyone is so over-the-top dysfunctional. Frankly that isn't my thing.
"In the Land of Women" has some real characters and you may even say they're dysfunctional, but they all feel REAL! The thing that strikes me about this film is how it demonstrates how hungry people are, just to be heard.
The main characters in this movie are desperately seeking someone to talk to. Not just anyone though. They are looking for someone that will actually LISTEN! You get to see the freedom they experience when they find this. It is this freedom that allows for the story to unfold. And what unfolds is the real affection and caring that people have for one another.
The acting is superb. I say this because the nuances required to pull this off are subtle. It takes a depth in the acting.
This is a chick flick but you guys out there could gather some tips from this. This movie shows some things women crave from their man. Being a man is different than being macho. I wish I had the kind of listening skills demonstrated by Carter (even though there is a dialog where he is not listening). He has these skills at the age of 26 and it took me at least 20 more years to begin to get a grasp.
I really like this film. It is heartfelt and very entertaining. |
