Grown-up, moving, but also cool

I went to Lake House reluctantly--I usually find both Bullock and Reeves a little cold (although they've been occasionally very strong in a few other movies, to be fair). But this is one of the best-paced movies I've seen in the past few years. It's never slow, but it really takes its time setting up both the characters and their sweet, slow build-up to romance. It's a bit like Sleepless in Seattle in that they don't meet for most of the movie, and a bit like You've Got Mail in that they communicate in letters, but it's more sober than the first and much less snarky than the second. Reeves is especially strong as a relatively self-satisfied man who opens up to something more through his mysterious connection to a woman from the future. The mood of the movie is more reflective and quiet than most American films--you can tell it's based on a foreign movie. But Reeves and Bullock are very American in their manners and style, so the movie never feels too dreamy or distant. And Chicago looks great. This won't appeal to boyfriends who want to see Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift. But there's some mystery and strangeness, and very cool dog.
