Don't be fooled by the publicity for this film. It's being promoted as a scathing satire of the tobacco industry. But the book that the film is based on was written by Christopher Buckley, the son of leading conservative intellectual William F. Buckley.
And the *book* is *not* a scathing satire of the tobacco industry. It's a scathing satire of rampant political correctness run amok. And the real villain of the piece is *not* the tobacco lobbyist. It's the prissy, fussy, nanny-state, liberal Senator from Vermont, who's mission in life is to protect everybody from everything, by taxing and regulating everything in sight.
*All* the characters in both the book and the movie are broadly and satirically drawn, sometimes to the point of absurdity. But the acting is excellent all the way around, and if you've read the book beforehand, you'll "get" the point of the movie much more clearly. Personally I enjoyed this movie so much that on my way out of the theater I lit up a Swisher Sweet.
So don't be fooled by the publicity...read the book first! |
