It is a well directed, beautifully photographed movie and the actresses are all very good. By her candid acting the actress playing Chuiya steals the show. Deepa Mehta explains simply some very complicated issues: under the cover of religion it's all about money, male libidinous desires and control.
One can love and admire India and still acknowledge that the situation of women there is shameful. Only some frustrated male viewer will be offended and will "find" negative things to say about this movie.
Read "First year after Beatrice" to see what would happen to a country that'd generalize prenatal discrimination as it's now started in several countries thanks to the use of ultrasounds. |
