The movie touches the 1930's & prior era covering the life of widows and the politics behind it. All started as a result of the caste system in India - which was originally meant to categorize a person based on his/her occupation and NOT by what he/she was born into. But over the years it took an ugly U-turn. I would recommend this movie, but I do not trust the numbers at the end of the movie - "35 millions widows and most of them live in poor conditions" - that I find it hard to believe. That is where Deepa Mehta gets carried away. Quite a few widows in present day India re-marry and my guess is that such traditions may exist only in the very backward villages. Also, I wasn't impressed with the casting of Lisa Ray - one very beautiful widow - it seemed like there was hope only for the pretty ones. Nandita Das would have been a much better pick. Gandhi's speech seemed irrelevant ... Chuiya was the best part of the movie. |
