I'd always known about suttee, the Hindu custom of the widow throwing herself on the funeral pyre. One would think that the custom of placing widows in a communal house, an ashram, would be more humane, yes? No. Instead, it is a slow stealing of the soul, and Deepa Mehta's "Water" proves this.
I keep thinking about the water metaphor, what it means. The widows are constantly washing throughout the film, but there are some things they can't wash away ... the stigma of widowhood, the things that the women in the ashram had to do to survive.
It is a beautiful film, worth the time. |
