The idea is a good one. The director directed "Erin Brockinwich". You even have the lovely Jennifer Garner.
Yet, this promising film quickly drowns.
Centering around young Gray Wheeler (Garner) the film begins with the death of her fiance. The rest of the film finds Wheeler uncovering a dark past about her ex and romantic involvent with a new guy, her fiance's best friend (Timothy Olyphant).
That's the entire plot.....Except...It moves slowly. Over two hours this half hour sitcom drags with dialogue. There is very little real action....Get the point?.....
If not, look at her sleezy friends . She lives with two friends-Kevin Smith and some unknown actor. Both are depressed. Smith wears a bathrobe throughout the film and tries suicide... The other who is really in love with Garner, bawls and mopes throughout the movie. By the end of the film you will wish he had committed suicide.
Let's not forget boyfriend, Olyphant. He wears a three day beard throughout the film. He smiles and chats. Chats and smiles. At no time does he have any chemistry with Garner. However, he does have good teeth.
Then there is the "other woman" , a ditzy Juliette Lewis. She has a kid.She messed around with Garner's ex while he was engaged. She hopped in many other beds,too . She has a four year child. The kid looks like the son of the dead fiance. Lewis is stuck in a role that tries to gain sympathy for her slutty behavior. Like everything else, it does not work.
But. she does have one good quality. She eats healthy.
Finally, there is Garner. She cries at the drop of the hat. Bawling her way through the film she reaches a point where she evoked laughter from a Sunday matinee audience.
Garner is the main attraction and she's not a good actress given this material.
By the way, this is not a romantic comedy.Like I stated, there is no beleivable romance between Garner and Oliphant. The attempts at comedy don't work.
Sometimes, when reviews are written the bad ones get picked on. I always figure that those who have a financial stake go through and try to bury the poor ones with their poor ratings. If you are reading this take note. Critics and those that have seen the movie are unanimous. They don't like CATCH AND RELEASE.
