That is how some execs described this film behind the scenes. Plagued with endless recuts and several pushed back release dates, this virtually unadvertised movie finally sees the light of day on Jan. 26th 2007. After seeing the movie at an Advanced Screening I knew why it had taken so long: It's just bad. No amount of twinkle in Jennifer Garner's eyes or irony in Kevin Smith's lines can disguise the fact that this movie is poorly written. The main question I have for the filmmakers is: Did this movie have to be made? Was this a story that is so entertaining, so wonderful, so funny and touching that it simply must be put on screens across the country for people to watch and fall in love with? The simple answer is no.

The studio knew this when they chose January as the release month. This is traditionally the month for bad releases. This is the month for movies that the studio wants to bury, write off and forget about to see the light of day. Why didn't this movie go straight to video? They (the studio) spent too much money on Garner and Smith and way too much on the endless edits and re-edits. Then even more on the song rights for the soundtrack.

But Vicnyc, if the spent so much money, why not release it when more people are going to see it? Why aren't they advertising it on TV? Why bury it in Jan? Because when all is said and done, no one will remember this movie at all. Somethimes, thats a good thing. We all remember Gigli, right? Why? Because it flopped. The studio spent too much money on this movie for it to flop famously. They are hoping that some people who don't know too much about it will end up seeing it to kill two hours on a Friday Night. Then, you have the pay-per view, DVD, and television viewings. Let me ask you: Have yo ever been flipping on HBO or SHO or MAX and seen a movie with a star you've never heard of? Have you ever looked at some obscure movie at Blockbuster and said to yourself "this may not be bad, when did it come out? Oh look honey, it's got (INSERT NAME OF STAR) and (INSERT NAME OF ANOTHER STAR)??? Of course you have. The studio is trying very hard to make you forget this movie is every coming out so you will be tricked in to either seeing it by accident and forgetting that they lost millions of dollars on it.

Incedently, the test audience I saw this with will never forget it: They hated it. They threw things at the screen, laughed at the wrong moments, and basically tore the entire movie to shreds.

The regular audiance I saw this with hated it even more. They hated it so much, many people walked out and began demanding their money back. I have never seen thrings of people demand their money back for a movie. Having been in the Film Production and Marketing business for over 20 years, I have seen a new low I never thought possble. That new low is "Catch and Release."
