Terry Gilliam's Tideland is visually stunning, with a compelling story. This dark, poignant fairy tale flips childhood and fairy tales on their proverbial ears. The young star, Jodelle Ferland, has incredible talent, and I look forward to watching her future performances. She was absolutely spot-on fey and innocent as Jeliza-Rose, the daughter of addicts, who resents her mother and lovingly prepairs her father's needles for him. Brendan Fletcher takes a potentially cliched and character and gives him nuances I was surprised to notice. In anyone else's hands, this would have been disappointing at best. Gilliam captures the fairy tale quality of childhood even in the darkest moments, and how a child left to her own devices creates her own reality.
