Tideland is by far the most disturbing film I've ever seen. By that I don't mean that it's the goriest or the sexiest or perverted film...but the most innocent. Sure there are gruesome situations, parents dying of drug overdoses, a little girl meticulously prepping smack for her parents' vacations, confusion of gender roles, taxidermy, and outlandish characters in general. But the way that these events were dealt with were entirely innocent. Gilliam said in the beginning of the film that in order to understand the film better one must search within their inner child. I did, and I was one of the few people to love the film. How many times when we were little kids did we not understand what death meant, what kisses did, talk to ourselves and toys in mirrors, imagine bizarre terrors over little things like trains, lawnmowers, the toilet, an abandoned garage...see what I mean? I think that Gilliam captured a very honest picture of childhood in the film. I could tell that he really cared about this film. Besides the amazing story itself the acting was wonderful(especially by this new child actor!), the adults were outlandish and peculiar through a child's eyes. The visuals were breathtaking, beautiful hills and meadows abounded. Very sharp dutch angles were utilized, some shots a 45degree tilt or more which was interesting.
Blah blah blah. I cannot accurately describe this film, neither can all the other reviews, you just have to experience the film. Maybe you'll be in the large group of those that hate it, maybe one of the few that love it like myself, and you might just be dumbstruck and a tad confused as to what you're feeling in your stomach. Maybe that feeling is your inner child...in Gilliam's case, a little girl. |
