This was neither an historical look at the French Monarchy, nor an entertaining tale. Boring and inaccurate. The costumes were great and that's about the only thing in this movie that was good. The pace is very slow and there is no building to a climax, and ultimately no climax, high point, or even a point a tension to hang on and watch. What might have made this movie into a real movie with a point to be made is if Capolla showed the growing anger of the French citizens as constrasted with the lavish living of the King and Queen. But instead, all we see is the lavishness of the Queen, and even that aspect of her is understated in this movie by the uneventful acting of Dunst. Characters in the movie are always doing the same actions over and over again. They eat big dinners in their big hair, then someone else with big hair runs in and delivers bad news. Constantly. Endlessly. And when the movie was over, most in the audience didn't know it ended. Those who know the history of the Queen we're waiting for more of the story to happen; those who didn't know the history were either sleeping or expecting something more to happen. And that's the central problem with this movie: nothing ever happens. The real history of Antoinette is so rich and involved, but this movie is flat, slow, and ultimately, pointless. |
