Let them see cake, let them see people eating cake BUT under no circumstances let them see why anyone would be upset with anyone for saying let them eat the cake that is shown so often and sumptuously in this calorie free sweets collage masked as a movie.
I'm not sure what the directors' message was or is or is supposed to be but this film was a two hour plus empty trifle that promised nothing and delivered mightily on that promise. The actors do well with what little they are given to work with and the film may actually garner a costume or cinematography award but that will in no way mitigate the diretors tepid handling of one of history's more well known urban legends.
In the film Marie deny's she said let anyone eat cake; we don't really know why it upset anyone ( not from the film source anyway ) and ultimately we aren't sure why Marie and Louis had to flee in slow motion down the lovely Lime Avenue but by the time the film ends we are way past caring. I don't mean to sound morbid but I only stayed til the end to see how Marie's decapitation was handled and I was robbed of even that dubious reward with the film's sudden and curiousously unemotional ending.
With no historical context to frame the situations, no conflict to speak of, and lacking any emotioanl hook Marie Antoinette is all style and no substance and I for one was sad to walk out of the theater so disappointed. I didn't hate this movie but other than some beautiful visuals and astonishing costume and dessert creations I find little that would make me recommend this film in any format other than on DVD. |
