I had the opportunity to see BEOWULF AND GRENDEL in Chicago on July 15, 2006
The film is very good... It was not a gory as I thought it would be, but the gory parts were very gory. I had to cover my eyes a couple of times.
Of course, I cried over Grendel, whom Ingvar Eggert Sigurosson brought to life with such a human touch, though he was troll. My heart just went out to him! I am such a waterfall when it comes to stories like this.
I know I was also pushed to tears by Gerard Butler's performance as Beowulf. His facial expressions, body language, and tone of voice told it all, when he felt the pain and guilt of his role in what happened to Grendel.
The scenery was beautiful! Sturla's (the director) vision of the people, from this humble cultural historian's point of view, was pretty much on the spot. And I always look for that in today's films. Some of the linguistic terms used might have been more from the modern era... but one can work around that.
Overall, this was a very intriguing film that I would recommend that everyone see! |
