On the whole this film ISN'T a lube job for the eyes, it's more about becoming aware of the grit that was in them to begin with. It is a stark human tale that knocks you off center, making you uncomfortable with easy answers to complex problems. It reveals human frailties, as real now as they were in AD 500. I've seen the film twice, once a 1000 miles from home in Canada and again a 3 hour drive from home in California. Two characters have really caught my attention, The first is Selma, an outcast witch whose plain-spoken and off-kilter ways humanize the plot with issues nobody else could see. The second very memorable character is Grendel who is achingly human and exquisitely wild, playing the perfect mirror to give the "civilized" warriors a glimpse of themselves. I'm hoping to see it yet again-it's that kind of film. |
