Leave it to the Independent film makers to come up with such an unusual take on this ancient story/poem. My admiration goes out to Sturla Gunnarsson for having the intestinal fortitude to pursue his dream of getting Beowulf & Grendel filmed in Iceland. The scenery was absolutely breath-taking. I felt like I was standing on the black beaches of Iceland. The use of Icelandic horses/ponies added much originality to the visuals. Although the story was tweaked to a degree, the adaptation was presented in such a way that it was understandable and flowed smoothly. There was an emotional mixture of hate, love, vengance, understanding, and questions why human nature is as it is. The casting was ideal. The hero was as he should be...strong, manly, handsome and with a sense of conscience to guide him. Gerard Butler certainly filled that bill. Grendel's character broke my heart. One couldn't help but have sympathy for such an ogre going through such emotional agony. It's a shame the US hasn't picked up distribution for this film yet. Compared to the supposed Hollywood blockbusters that have wound up flops, Beowulf and Grendel is a very refreshing and entertaining picture. I had to travel to Montreal Canada to see it. Get with the program you US distributors. You need to take a chance on this one. |
