If you liked the last version of TCM, you'll probably be entertained by this one. However, it just isn't as good.
There's certainly no shortage of gore in this film. While I found myself squirming in my seat watching some of the grotesque activities of Hoyt and Leatherface, it wasn't the same kind of squirming that I got from the first film. Some of the most uncomfortable moments were when Hoyt was playing mind-games with the main characters and you were made to feel uneasy due to his unpredictable nature. In this version, Hoyt seemed to have less patience for mind-games and more interest in physical torture.
The main characters could have also used a fresher storyline. We already saw the 'joyriders who go through the wrong town' concept the last time 'round. The character development also suffers in this film as well. I just didn't care as much about these characters' fate.
It was interesting to get more of the back story on the crazy family, but already knowing that they all survive (since this is a prequel), they could have covered this in the form of a flashback and continued the story from the last movie. The back story just wasn't SO critical that we needed an entire movie about it. Before the film even starts, you already have some idea about what has to happen in the end of this one. What fun is that? And the end itself is pretty predictable and unoriginal.
Again, if you liked the last one, you'll probably be good with this one, but just don't expect much new ground to be covered. |
