Predictable story countered by awesome dances

It's a story we've seen before: High class, wordly teacher of some profession turns school rejects/punks into champions. But the film, despite it's hoakiness, does redeem it's tired and cliched story. Antonio Banderas is smooth, and the kids, in their cliched characters, give solid performances. The dance scenes are spectacular, and are the film's saving graces(the best are the two tangos, one featuring Banderas, the other a snazzy 3-way dances feeds off the energy of a love triangle between one girl and two guys). The choreography is stunning, and it easily makes up for the hackneyed premise. Several other problems also come to mind: there is virtually no(deeper) reason as to why Banderas' character wants to be there other than "I want to teach them to ballroom dance...". 2.) One of the aforementioned tangos is based off of a love triangle that we learn about pretty late in the film, and hardly get any connection with which left me thinking "that was a great dance, but why were they given the best one? there's one pair who we learn a lot more about who probably deserved more(you'll see who it is pretty quickly)" Not that the pair doesn't have a nice dance, but it feels cut short, and rather tacked on. All in all, it's probably worth seeing, maybe in the theater, maybe on dvd(i bet the dances are more impressive on a big screen though....right? |
