How can anyone call this film 'Athiest' or Anti-God???...Here's MY unbiased review:
It's a mythical 'Good vrs Evil' story!. The young girl Lyra is the only one alive who can read this golden compass that when asked a question tells "True Things" (so you can't be lied to or hoodwinked if you ask it a question). This movie takes place in an "Alternate Universe" which is one of Many (Think "Sliders" or "The One").
The State is controlled by the Magisterium and they have control of their world. Enter the little Lyra and her Uncle who has discovered how to explore the other universes- This is done thru golden dust (which can't be seen by 'Normal' people)- it's what binds their reality together (Similar to 'The Force' in "Star Wars")- There are the 'Good guys' who just want to live normally and then their are 'Bad Guys' who rep the Magisterium and want to control Everything!- They obviously want to eliminate the little girl cause she's a threat to the State. That's it! It's like "Harry Potter", "Star Wars", "Narnia", & "Lord of the Rings"- it's an Myth that has Magic and Wars. There is NEVER a mention of God, Jesus, Satan, Mary or Popes.
The characters have Animal Totems that follow them around (like Jimmeny Cricket, a counter-part or conscience)- kill the person, kill the Spirit Animal...these are called "Daemons" (Not EVIL Imps- They're just called that). This is an Alternate Reality!- It's weirder than the Taking Trees from "LOTR". Yes, there are Witches and they fly...but I didn't see any Gingerbread houses- lol. It's a Magical world- how can you not have Witches?- lol.
I never read the books (I want to now)- I enjoyed the story, The ending was fine with me, The adults are more interesting than the child characters and it's Visually Stunning!
For the Record: It's more 'New Age' and similar to the mythos of Astrology that Anti-Religious. Weathers it's the Magisterium, Voldemort, Darth Vader, or the Wicked Witch- You can't have story without 'Bad Guys'- never thought it was "The Church" cause the Villians appear very Secular and Athiest! (Yes, the Villians appear 'Godless')- so if I was a Christian I'd rooting for the 'Good Guys' as Eva Green's character says, The War of this plot is about "Free Will" and last I checked God was all about that!- Use your "Free Will" see the movie if you want to! |
