Akeelah and the Bee is the story of eleven year old Akeelah Anderson and her triumph aganist any odds that came her way. Akeelah lives in South LA with no real role model or guidance after the death of her father a couple years earlier. Her mother struggles to keep her punk brother in line while managing to keep a steady job. Akeelah starts feeling like she doesnt have a purpose until she is turned to the world of Spelling Bees. Through the guidance of her coach,(Fishburne) the duo prepare to take one of the countries best spellers while they battle continous domestic issues.
Akeelah and the Bee is sure to be seen on plenty of top ten lists come December. This film is heartwarming and truly gripping. You feel for the character due to the phenomonal performance by both Keke Palmer and Laurence Fishburne. The visuals provide excitement and emotion in every scene and you cant stop rooting for this little girl. The director does try to butter you up with a little too much emotion sometimes. This only occurs a couple of times though and it doesnt heart the film's messsage.
This is the closest thing to the best movie this year and you cannot miss it. One of the best feel good family films in recent years. You cant stop rooting for Akeelah and you wont. |
