I LOVED this movie. The little girl (Keke Palmer?) did an amazing job with all her emotions and expressions. I expected a sappy, predictable, another spelling bee movie, and it was all of those, but yet it was SO very enjoyable. That young lady can act, and Lawrence Fishburne did a great job as the prof in a performance worthy of James Earl Jones. I also appreciated that the movie SHOWED the tremendous amount of work that goes into something like this and how Akeelah worked, worked, worked to accomplish her dream. So often our tv shows and movies just show the dream coming true without showing the blood and sweat that go into it. And then, the whole "it takes a village" theme was woven well into the film with everyone pitching in. I thought some of Angela Basset's lines were written a bit cliche, but she did a nice job overall. But again, it was the girl playing Akeelah that really put this movie over the top. She was superb. You just want to give her a big hug. Who could blame Javier? I would show this movie to school classes, and it was G rated enough that I could take my mother. The humorous moments were good too, and I loved the irony of Booger from Revenge of the Nerds being cast as the principal. (My generation growing up). Again I'm not saying it isn't a bit predictable or sappy, but it was the most fun I've had at the theater in the last year or year and a half. GREAT MOVIE!! Go see it with your kid. |
