Akeelah and the Bee is a great story about a girl with great courage and strength. She comes from a family where her father died when he was six and her mother is doing all she can to support the family. The school she goes to, doesn't give her the education she is capable of learning. One area she is very intelligent in, is spelling. She soon develops a passion for it and despite conflict of interest with her mother, she goes for her dream of going to the National Finals of the spelling bee in Washington D.C.
I was very impressed by Keke Palmer (Akeelah) and her acting ability. There are some great child actors, but I have to say, she was very, very good. Even in scenes with Lawrence Fishburn who plays her coach, she holds her own and often outshines him. If for nothing else, seeing her strong performance is enough to see this film. The movie has a great story and is great for families. B |
