Bad Editing, and a Bad Script Sink this One

I was very excited at the prospect of attending an early screening of All the Kings Men last night. The cast was superb, and you can't beat the pedigree of the film... Pulitzer prize for the book, Best picture for the prior film. Unfortuantely, this was one bad, boring, and outright confusing movie.

First off, while Sean Penn did some interesting acting (grand posturing and arm waving), I unfortunately needed subtitles to understand his slurring speech most of the time. As for bad accents, Penn was the best of a very sad bunch. While the cast looked the part of Southern hicks and fatcats, the dialect barely matched up. James Gandolfini's "southern accent" was plagued with more than a bit of his Jersey diction. Let alone Anthony Hopkins, who I usually love beyond belief. Hopkins didn't even try to drop his Brittish accent.

Finally, I'm no intellectual slouch, but something about the editing and pace of this movie lead my mind to drift, and left me at a complete loss regarding most of the characters' motivations and key plot points. Boring and nonsensical. Save your money and your time. I wanted a refund, and I got in for free. A true waste of talent, which is perhaps the worst part of the film.
