Uncompelling, uninsightful

The makers of this movie had a lot of opportunities to make it more compelling. They had an ex-Lt. Col. who retired from the military because she felt the consultants the pentagon would hire were more loyal to defense contractors than the government. They had Gore Vidal. They even interviewed John freakin McCain.
Making a compelling movie about the military-industrial complex should have been like shooting fish in a barrel for the filmmakers. They never even tried to talk about the sheer size of the defense industry in real terms (ie: how much money is involved in operating a permanent base in Iraq--say, the costs of hiring staff to serve meals or maintain the facility, cost of fuel, construction material that is shipped from abroad, etc.).
In the end, I sighed, scratched my head, and thought, "yeah, that sucks." But I didn't really learn anything new. |
