I went into this movie disliking Paul Walker and his seemingly consistent over-acting and forced "tough guy" image. This movie shatters the image of him that most people have, "The Fast and the Furious Guy". At first the New Jersey accent and mafioso machismo were a little hard to swallow, but his portrayal became very convincing as the opening of the film progressed. The story is just a bit over the top (it is a movie) but still very well written , the direction is excellent, and the editing (transitions, cutaways, fade ins/outs) were very well done and interesting. Also the camera work was masterful. One shot that sticks out (this is not a spoiler*) is when Joey (Walker) and Nicky (Neuberger) are climbing up the ladder in the abandoned park and the camera is overhead as the climb up the it flips backwards as the get off the ladder and the scene stays upside down for a moment and is segued with a flash from Joey's flashlight. If you're a movie-geek like me you will appreciate it, but even if you're not shots such as that one will keep you interested throughout this FANTASTIC action-thriller. Also, performances by Chazz Palminteri, Vera Farmiga, Cameron Bright, Alex Neuberger, and pretty much all of the other players were convincing and not overacted or unnatural. Bravo to the cast, crew, and writer of this movie. More twists than a rubix cube and action packed with some good acting, directing, and special effects to boot. Must see for action/thriller fans. |
