Above Average Creepiness

Once you see that "Pulse" did not give pro reviewers (NY Times, etc.) advance screenings, you might say, "uh oh -- not good." But do not fear -- "Pulse" is not bad at all. Actually, it's pretty creepy from start to finish. It takes a better than average horror movie to cause me to squirm in my seat and it did just that.
Sure, "Pulse" steals some of its creepy ideas from "The Ring" and maybe even "White Noise", but there have been worse "Ring" wannabes made (i.e. "The Grudge"). Plus, if a movie is going to thieve ideas, it's good to steal from a good movie and also do it properly. IMO, "Pulse" does that effectively.
The overall story isn't perfect. It's interesting, but sometimes it's borderline silly. Even so, I didn't find myself rolling my eyes about anything -- which is good. I also was content the ending as well. It reminded me of like a "Terminator" type of resolution. A win/lose situation. It's not an out-of-the-blue shocker, yet not predictable either.
I was not familiar with any of the young cast, but for being a bunch of nobodies, I felt they were a solid bunch overall. I was also unfamiliar with the director, but I found he did a solid job setting the tone (especially with color usage), building tension and delivering some well-done, drawn out creepiness.
Overall, I was happy about this flick and it did the job it was supposed to do as a 'horror' movie. If you are looking for more gore -- but less scares -- go see "The Descent." If you want to be creeped out, "Pulse" might just be for you. |
