Somewhat "Notorious!"

Gretchen Mol really got into the skin of "Bettie Page." I thought she gave a really impressive performance!
I think this movie shows the many contradictions of Betty Page's life and personality. She is a bit of a "conundrum." Naughty but nice and sexy but innocent are but some of the pieces of the puzzle. I think the audience expects that if you've made a movie about something you've figured it out. The big question is: How can someone so congenial and innocent with such a childlike quality have been participating in S and M and bondage films? How could she participate in something considered so lewed and lascivious and wanton. Well, I don't have the answer but by reading other reviews I keep hearing this same question.
I wasn't familiar with Betty Page before seeing this film so I went to her official website and learned quite a bit. From what I could see of the real "Betty Page" seemed like a child playing dress-up in Mom's clothes. While participating in this somewhat depraved industry she brought honor to the human form regardless of how others valued her commodity. |
