Surprisingly Decent

I love horror movies, therefore I'm used to being disappointed by cheap, plot-thin attempts at horror. The Gathering, even though flawed, had a surprisingly interesting plot.
The story drew in some of the more creepy elements from other movies (Mothman Profecies, Exorcist the Begining) but changed them in a way that didn't feel like a complete rip-off. The ancient buried Church with the un-orthodox crucifix as well as the premonitions of a pending disaster have been done before. But the director was able to effectively integrate these elements into the stroy, so it didn't feel forced.
The acting was understandably silly, but not too bad for a horror movie. The visuals were effective in creating a dark feeling to the movie.
There were a couple of unrealistic moments (like in most horror films) where some really amazing detective work is done to discover small faces in the background of historical film strips. A little far-fetched, but acceptable.
The movie was over-all entertaining. Fast-paced ending seemed tacked-on, but the movie's story was intresting enough to that point. Christina Ricci was gorgeous, you gotta love the director for having so many shots of her waking up bra-less in the middle of the night in a white, thin wife-beater shirt. Lots of nice see-through shots. Not the best movie, but entertaining enough. |
