I came out of the movie dazzled by the portrait of the world which Alfonso displayed, and I recommend anyone who wants to end the year with a good movie to watch Children of Men.
For those of you who did not see the trailer, Children of Men gives one possible scenario of the future. In 2027, women were infertile. Whether the cause be pollution or manipulation of human genetics, the world had nonetheless no hope nor explanation for this terrible phenonemon. Here, Alfanso Cuaran does a good job of demonstrating this atmosphere of hopelessness. Around, the buildings and street streets seem dark and dirty. Many middle aged people walk down the street displaying frowns. Of course, the peculiarity we find here is that there are no childrens. Without children, the world seems a little more, well, dead. Dead or at least becoming dead. Hopelessness had sprung chaos all over the world. Britian is the only country able to maintain piece, though the country has been trying to keep immigrants away.
The movie starts off on another gloomy day for Theo with only one difference. He gets kidnapped by a group of terrorists, whose leader happens to be his ex-wife, Julian. She wants Theo to use the connection he has with his cousin in order to get a passport for a girl to come into Britain. However, she actually came to Theo for another reason: she trusts him. This theme is played over and over throughout the movie: who exactly is trustworthy? With this in mind, the movie seems to serve as a critique against our society, a society filled with people who only care of political agendas or men who care of wealth. As a result, people miss the overall vision: to save mankind.
In spite of the gloominess and chaos, we can still ironically see lots of humor, though one may wonder why there is sarcasm. The movie almost served as a parody of our government, as well depicting a tragic picture of a world without hope. a weird, but interesting mix. Michael Caine plays a very sarcastic man. Theo seems to surprisingly have a humor even in the face of danger. That is not to say that the other cast members are not interesting. Every character seem to be individuals whom one may or may not care about.
Overall, the experience was incredible. Alfonso was able to create a realistic, detailed enriched world, interesting characters, and a plot that's jaw dropping at times and depressing at others. I recommend this great movie to everyone. |
