If I do nothing else good this year, perhaps I can give you 2 additional hours of life to enjoy which you would forfeit if you wasted them paying to watch "Running with scissors".

I love everyone in the cast. I liked the acting. I liked the NPR review of it.. I like the 1-off, (ok, usually 2-off) odd-ball, non-Hollywood movies. However, there are only 2 movies I have ever walked out on, and this was one. This is a complete a utter waste of time, money, and your thought process trying to make sense of the random incoherent ramblings of a child growing up under a delusional, abusive mother. I may be biased - my folks both worked with emotionally disturbed kids, and I find nothing humorous about their tragedies...

Its billed as a comedy/drama - its neither. Sadly, it is a mostly true story - enough so that the writer and Sony Pictures were successfully sued by his adoptive family in the story for not protecting their identities enough.

SPOILER ALERT - IF YOU FEEL COMPELLED TO SEE THIS ABYSMAL MOVIE, READ NO FURTHER.

Even tho I am big Bill Murry fan, I did not like and would not recommend the Royal Tenenbaums, nor Rush (both of which this has been likened to), but I did manage to sit thru them, and would highly recommend either over this disaster. This movie was excruciating boredom and uncomfortable disturbing imagery of unrelated fragments of imagined / remembered child hood drama that was supposed to pass for entertainment (no Bill Murry isnt in this, nor would his presence have enabled me to endure 1 minute more of the movie than I did). A random child, never to be seen again, behind a 2 year old Christmas tree in a pink house, saying he just pooped - how symbolic and humorous! More! More!

At least 2 of the most powerful scenes which shaped the narrators life in the book, were gutted, and other scenes were made up for the movie goers...overall, it was pathetic. Pedafile relationships not only condoned but encouraged - one between a 41 year old physically abusive patient and his Psychiatrist's 13 year old daughter in order to blackmail the man for money to pay off the IRS, and one with the Psychiatrist's 33 year old violent, adoptive son orally raping the 13 year old son of the delusional mother, who then gives him away to that family. Both these events are only given lip service (pun intended) in the movie, so if this interests you, buy the book for explicit details. Then the boy goes back home afterward to find his nude mother and her nude lesbian lover (in the book they were nude, in the movie, they were just kissing, fully clothed) And the Mother then sitting him down to say she will not be oppressed by his judgment of her like her childhood (racist-slur-for-blacks) Nanny was when she was growing up. Man, they dont write comedies like that anymore... Thank goodness.

The tag line for the movie Airplane was "You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll kiss 3 bucks good-bye!".

This movies tag line would be more like "Theres 2 hours & 8 bucks I'll never get back."
