I went to a sneak preview of The Omen. I did not have high hopes. I thought the trailers gave away everything.
The credits at the beginning of the movie did nothing to raise my expectations. Anytime the letter 't' appeared, it morphed into an upside down cross. 'O' morphed into 6. how corny!!
Then the movie started. Julia Stiles was oh so serious - many audience members laughed. uh oh ... not a good sign.
then the audience jumped ...
and a while later jumped again ...
I'm not talking a small jump. I'm talking leap into your neighbor's lap. I'm talking throw your popcorn into the first row. It's been a long time since I've been so shocked.
By the end of the movie the entire audience was into it, with many applauding and cheering.
Julia Stiles ended up giving a great performance. I'm not going to talk too much about any of the performances, because to do so would reveal plot details.
Mia Farrow was incredibly creepy. The movie belonged, however, to Liev Schreiber, who wisely did not try to recreate Gregory Peck's performance from the original, but rather made the part his own.
If you want to be scared, this is a good movie for you.
WARNING!! This movie is much more graphic than the original. DO NOT take the kids. |
