STRENGTHS:
* TOPICAL AND TO THE POINT: The film emphasized its relevance to the current anti-terrorism paranoia while seemingly staying true to the Murrow/McCarthy story. It wasn't melodramatic and it didn't seem to take very many filmmaking liberties in telling the story.
* REAL FOOTAGE USED: The film used portrayed Senator Joseph McCarthy through actual footage -- not through actor imitation. In an NPR interview, Producer/Director/Actor George Clooney mentioned that he decided not to use an actor to portray McCarthy so the film could not be accused of exaggerating McCarthy's speeches and mannerisms.
* CAN ALMOST SMELL THE CIGARETTES: The burning cigarettes, stark 1950's newsroom set, and pressed white shirts made a seemingly realistic setting.
* EXCELLENT EDWARD R. MURROW PORTRAYAL: David Strathairn's portrayal felt real and not like a immitation.
WEAKNESSES:
No real weaknesses, but the film only hinted at some of the subplots. The subplot about the fellow newscaster, Don Hollenbeck (Ray Wise), wasn't fully explained. It would have been nice to have a postscript if there was any kind of aftermath to his story. The Joe (Robert Downey, Jr.) and Shirley (Patricia Clarkson) Wershba subplot performances were interesting, but didn't seem essential to the story.
RECOMMENDATION: A+
Great 1950s historical picture that stuck to telling the story. |
