This is a very important story and deserved to be told without over-dramatisation and heavy-handed references to the present. This is exactly what Clooney did. He took the story and presented it a face value, with no theatrics nor any heavy-handedness. The movie felt like a real slice of life during the time of the events portrayed. The focus was mostly on the battle with McCarthy, but other things were happening as well. The downsizing of CBS, the policies on married couples working together, the advertising on television. All these were important issues at the time and Clooney did an excellent job of noting them without detracting from the flow of the movie.
David Strathairn was an inspired choice as Edward Murrow. He was very composed and completely believable. The decision to use original clips of Joe McCarthy was also a very good idea.
All in all, an excellent movie that should be required viewing for anyone who didn't actually live through that era.
