The character says we'll hate him by the end of the film. It's not true. We don't hate him, we don't like him either. We have no feelings one way or the other, because the motivation behind who he is is lacking.

The worst part of the film is the story line stutters through till the end. The director should learn the word "cut" and should learn how to tell a story. That would help him.

The story jumps from one scene to the other with no build-up. It's a complicated tale that isn't woven together. It is FAR cry from Dangerous Liasons (a book by a libertine in the 17th c.).

Another embarrassingly stupid idea was to meld fake old English accents with modern swear words. Every other word used in this film was from the 20th century. Swearing a lot isn't shocking, and actually is common place. Libertines were nobel men, who spoke well, and had very sick perverted lives when in recreation. Again, I'll point to Dangerous Liasons - I doubt there was a single swear word in it, but the story is a million times more forceful than this muck.

We really wanted to leave the theater after about 20 minutes of this mud. The last half, though, does get a bit better.

John Valmont was a true person in history who wrote a book entitled "Sodom". He, like other libertines, were filled with hatred for just about everything. They were truly horrid people, with debauchery and sick twisted ways. The 2 most famous libertines were Marquis de Sade and Alex Crowley (the worst of them all).

I don't think it's worth renting on DVD.
