This film took an age to actually get to the screen, and by the time it ad I had devoured every book on Rochester I could get my hands on.. The film doesn't waste our time explaining him or the his life getting to this point too much.
It did however give you a fantastic look into the complex soul of this contradictory genius as he falls
Depp played him to perfection.. who else could walk the line between all the traits this man had.. from Favourite at court, to the man it was the mode to hate, a unfaithful but passionate lover, bored and witty all at once.. hateful and hating.. but unlike he seems to so desire we don't hate Rochester, we don't even 'not like him'.. and that is down to Depp's absolutely brilliant performance, I don't think anyone else could have done the real man justice
The much criticised smokey air, and muted colours, the mud and dirt, that some critics seem to hate, actually works, I could not imagine London in bright sunshine.. glorious colours and pretty costumes, matching the debauched darkness of Rochesters soul.. so it compliments the story of the man.. not a pretty period piece.. but if yo uknow anything about Rochester.. you did not expect that I hope
As usual it'll be an injustice if Depp is not nominated and he deserves to win with this a amazing role |
