The Libertine, in itself is a film that is wonderfully acted, with Depp putting in a fantastic performance in the lead role, however, it does suffer from being slightly overcomplicated and over theatrical at times.
Depp, as I've mentioned plays a very good role as Rochester, a man tortured by his personality and later madness, whilst the supporting actors each do a very good job as the people in his life, ranging from his long suffering wife, to King Charles II. But whilst the acting in this film is a huge plus, the story itself tends to drag, as the high quality ,
dark storyline tends to grate on you, as you somehow hope for some light relief that the film seems to assume you'll get from the acts of the lead character.
However, I cant say its all doom and gloom. The directing is very good, as are the locations/sets and if you're not too worried about the constant sexual references and sometimes sexual acts comitted in the film, then this is certainly the film for you, and even if you're half convinced, it's probably worth a look. |
