John Wayne made more than a hundred movies, but only 3 or 4 were really good, and this is one of them. A true screen classic, made in the early years of aviation, and the first "disaster" film, but in reality this is a character study with Wayne's character at center stage, but with many engrossing vignettes involving the passengers and crew, one of whom is Robert Stack who, years later, will star in the disaster spoof Airplane. Other notable performers include Jan Sterling, the great supporting actor Paul Kelly, Paul Fix, Phil Harris, and Wally Brown as a befuddled navigator. This was the last great film for director William Wellman (previously made Wings, Public Enemy, a Star is Born, and the Oxbow Incident among others). Dimitri Tiomkin's haunting score won an Oscar. |
