Fluke ... or are you simply conned?

A chess game. Did you listen carefully to the dialog of the film or were you simply waiting for everything to be handed to you? Perhaps there is no explanation for this film and it is just a fluke of Guy Richie's works. Or perhaps we were conned by the film itself to provoke the utter feelings provided by the theme up to the very ending?

The audience is fed with certain clues, hints, images, shots, sequences, and plots like any ordinary film. The audience itself would think it is the smarter opponent picking apart the film being the omniscient observer that knows more than everyone involved in the film. However it was all just a chess game in which we were playing against a smarter opponent, the film itself.

It is as if we were tagging along hoping to figure it all out, knowing what to expect and what to determine with what we're given. Yet little is it made known that the film IS what it tells, it is a con. The film surrounds itself over a central idea, which is the idea of a con. It's almost put together like an essay providing a thesis that will be proved by creating and giving examples to surround it. The audience is even conned to the very end to exemplify the meaning of the film when there is nothing to even look at when the audience is expecting something.

The film is criticized as a over the top use of plots, subplots, and visuals to provide a theme that will be too confusing to understand. In reality it is simple, it all revolves around a conning idea. It's a revolver going around playing this game of tricking the eye and the mind of what it shows. Guy Richie deserves far more credit than anyone has given him about this film when many criticized this work as a failure in comparison to the rest of his brilliance. It's hardly a failure, it's just different in a way that separates itself from just about every other film you can watch. It's not for the regular viewer, it requires more abstract thinking than usual. Definitely a new top recommendation on my list.

Just remember, perhaps we are not as smart as we think we are. Perhaps we're just being conned.
