I was quite disappointed in this film. From what the critics have said about it to the overall positive reception it has received in the 'Independent Film' circle, I anxiously awaited this film to come to my hometown so I would have a chance to finally see it. I think the primary problem with the film is its length. Running over 2 hours long, the movie seems to drag along. Some 3 hour long movies I've sat through and at the end couldn't believe that 3 hours had passed. With this movie, I was itching for it to end about an hour and 20 minutes into it. Here is why - we KNOW that Tommy Lee Jones loves his murdered friend Melquiades Estrada, but we really never know why. We KNOW that Barry Pepper (playing the border patrolman who kills Melquiades Estrada) is an absolute ass, but again, we never find out WHY (or what has happened in his past) to make him become such a hot-tempered racist. January Jones is a talented actress who was not put to good use in this film - she deserved better. And after coming home from the theater and writing this review, I think that anyone who has seen this movie deserved better, too. |
