suddenly this movie pops up at the multiplex. for three days only. so off i went. feeling a bit anxious because its an r-rating and i don't like cruelty, gore or sexual violence depicted in films.

not to worry.

this is first-rate b-movie schlock. completely unbelievable but thoroughly enjoyable and entertaining.

don't believe any of the reviews. essentially this is a mafia movie.

not for one moment did viggo mortensen's character seem ordinary. his children are weird. his wife is much too hot to be married to some boondock coffee-shop owner. no small town farmer would be that efficient with a gun and viggo's obviously trained his dorky son to be as violent as he himself is.

so the real question is. will viggo be able to carry on with his small-town life now that his former buddies in the mafia know where he lives.

some great scenes in this film. when viggo's face morphs between being tom and joey is priceless. ed harris and stephen mchattie are excellent villains. there is completely gratuitous full frontal nudity by the female lead that adds nothing whatsoever to the plot. the usual totally weird mafia kissing sequence you just know is the signal for murder and mayhem.

i suppose the hook to this film is that the viggo mortensen character is about 100 times more violent than the killers that he comes into contact with. his wife and children, if they had the slightest sense, should run far, far away from such a person. because the day would come when he would use that violence upon them.

have i mentioned that guy who scored this film also scored lord of the rings. believe me. howard shore reprises his hobbit chords for everyones delectation. very out-of-body.

all in all. a great effort by everyone. but its still only a b-movie. and thankfully it's aimed at adults.

i came out of the multiplex smiling and happy. going to see it again tomorrow.

thank you d cronenberg.
