Having been raised on the IRON RANGE of Minnesota and the daughter who's dad worked in the mine for 35 years, I can tell you that this movie is EXACTLY what went on and probably still does to some extent in the iron mines. It is for this very reason that my dad would not allow any of his daughters to work in the mines during our summer vacations. I went into the movie with an open mind because I was leary of a Hollywood production that could grasp the truth of the IRON RANGE. What I can tell you is this. This movie is so accurate that I felt as if I was transported to my youth and early 20's and 30's.
The acting was so superb. Charlize Theron is the front runner in my eyes for OSCAR. She was able to grasp Josey and bring her to true light right in front of my eyes. Frances McDormand gives and outstanding supporting role as the female union representative. Along with that, Sissy Spacek is wonderful as Josey's mother. I saw so many fathers of friends that I had growing up, in Josey's dad, Richard Jenkins. The lunch pail, clothing and the way that he talked, brought back many memories for me. In addition, all of the men that were in the scene of the Union Meeting, looked like they ACTUALLY came right out of the pit. It was unbelieveable.
The visuals of the movie are totally accurate. Even though I moved off of the range 6 years ago, watching this movie, made me feel like I was back UP NORTH all over again.
I highly suggest that everyone see this movie. Be prepared that this movie will stir many emotions in anyone who sees it. And that is exactly what it is intended to do.
North Country is a winner in my eyes. I have seen a lot of movies lately. This is by FAR, the best movie in a long long time.
