I have worked in the Taconite mines of northern Minnesota for the better part of thirty years. As I sat and watched this movie, I tried to be as objective as I possibly could and tried not to take a sexist attitude toward it. Although this movie explores the female view of the Taconite industry, and what it is like for a woman to work in the mines, it fails to show a complete picture. It should have included a background to the mindset that made the Mesabi Iron Range what it was, and what it is.
On the other hand, this movie very accurately depicts the problem that developed in the smaller mining operations near the eastern range town of Eveleth, which the movie calls Pearson Mining. It's sad to say, but the film's story is a very realistic portrayal of the situation that existed, and to some extent still exists today, regarding the treatment of female miners.
In fairness, however, the audience should have been allowed to see the male point of view, which would have provided an understanding of why the sexist attitudes existed. Very often, because of the sheer physical nature of Taconite mining, women had to be given lighter loads, and this spawned many of the hard feelings that union brothers had toward their union sisters, and sometimes still have. It is not always equal work for equal pay. |
