I wouldn't want every film to be Broken Flowers. But having watched more or less the same 10 movies remade over and over for the past 15 years, it was a nice change of pace. The funny parts were wonderful, and the pacing was perfect. We were along for part of the character's life. Even the drawn out drive to each destination was so nicely filmed that it drew me in.
For most movies, everyone in the theater knows everything that's going to happen from the opening credits on. There's some comfort in that. But here, Jarmuch presents a piece of life, with characters who seem to have each lived a life before the camera pointed at them. He shows a world as rich and maddening and unceratin as the one outside the theater, but with a good soundtrack as well. |
