As a Catholic, I'm always drawn to movies or books like this out of curiosity. The DaVinci Code, Angels and Deamons, books/movies of that nature always peak my interest. So I set out with a bunch of friends to see how the Exorcism of Emily Rose panned out.
I read many reviews so I knew what to expect going in but let me tell you now, that a good 90% of the movie takes place in or around the court room. The movie itself is based off the trial of the Priest who performed the Exorcism of Emily Rose. He is being charged with Criminol Negligance due to the state that Emily Rose ended up in.
As far as the "scare factor" goes. Honestly, if you've seen the previews, or watched any on Yahoo Movies...you've seen them all. No joke. Every last scary moment is captured in the previews. I suppose this is done so they can portray this as being very scary in order to rope you in.
Being that this is based off a true story, you can't really knock the story line. I mean, it's a worthy story line. I just think that most people are going to see this movie for the "scare factor" and there isn't really too much of one. Is it thought provoking, sure. You can't help but wonder if spirits of this nature really do exist. But as pointed out in the movie, if you want to believe in God and Angels then you must believe in deamons and the Devil.
Overall, I give this movie a solid C. The previews are very misleading and I believe it's done intentionally. They would like the movie-goer to believe this is another "Ring" type movie, when it's not. As far as Court-Room dramas go, it's not bad. I'd recommend this movie but nothing more than a matinee. |
