Poor Use of Time

Four minutes into the film, I wished I was doing something else....and the feeling never improved. The character Isabel (Mitchell) begins by telling the group that she was raped while hitchhiking at age 14 and her comments continue in that vein for the whole movie. It was quite disturbing, since she is the one that initiates sex between the two main characters and talks about it in detail with all the other autistic group members. She seems to take advantage of Hartnett's character. The supporting characters are stereotypical. The one positive in the story was the main characters begin to make compromises for the other's comfort, Mitchell at one point replaces the garbage in the apartment that she was about to throw away, knowing that that may upset Hartnett. Throughout the movie, however, the audience didn't know whether to root for the success of the pair's relationship or to pray that they would break up and get it over with. |
