SCARY...

The idea that the dumb will inherit the earth is terrifying. My wife and I watched it together. We are both elementary school teachers. Aside from the obvious parallels the society depicted in the film has with the society we find ourselves in today, the loss of intelligence as shown in the film is real. The society depicted in the film clearly had the advantage of being able to make use of the technology of prior generations, but heaven help them when that technology finally breaks down. Naked cannibals? Neo-neanderthals? Farce/satire? The casting of the female lead as an African American prostitute was troubling. They writers could have just as easily made her a meter maid, a grocery store clerk, or a receptionist in a dentist's office. But no, they went with the stereotype. Oh well for that. In any case, the literal dumbing down of society because of fertility rates is a reality we work with every day. Example: two sisters, three children each, both were teenage mothers with limited education and sporadic employment. All six children have to regularly attend remedial classes between school terms. I give this movie an A for being so thought provoking. |
